Training: Geriatric Auxiliary Nurse

The training to become a geriatric auxiliary nurse teaches knowledge and skills for qualified participation and assistance in the care and welfare of old people, either healthy or ill. The training enables auxiliary nurses to perceive responsibility, with the guidance of a qualified nurse, in the inpatient, day-patient, outpatient and open care of the elderly, particularly in respect of nursing and social tasks.

The one-year training includes at least 850 hours of practice and 720 hours of theory. The practical training in the care of the elderly is carried out in inpatient and outpatient facilities (see practical training providers). The final exam comprises a practical, written and oral part.

Training Content

The theoretical training encompasses the following aspects:

Tasks and concepts in the care of the elderly

  • Integrate theoretical foundations in the care of the elderly
  • Plan, realise, document and evaluate the care of older people
  • Care for the elderly in a personal and situation-appropriate way
  • Instruct, advise and hold discussions
  • Participate in the medical diagnosis and therapy

Assistance in the structuring of life

  • Take the lifestyles and social networks of the elderly into account
  • Support older people in the design of their residential and living environments
  • Support older people in the organisation of their day and with their self-organised activities

Legal and institutional framework conditions

  • Institutional and legal frameworks in the care of the elderly
  • Quality assurance measures in the care of the elderly

Care for the elderly as a profession

  • Develop professional self-understanding
  • Learn to learn
  • Learn to deal with crises and difficult social situations
  • Take care of, and promote, one's own health

Religious instruction

  • Encounter people
  • Encounter dying people
  • Design encounters

Language competence

  • Complete language exercises and communication
  • Reflect upon language
  • Use of literature

In the practical training, the knowledge acquired in class is applied and deepened. It is ensured by appropriate professionals and practical instructors and supported by the Vinzenz von Paul-Schule.

Requirements

Applicants must have at least a certificate of secondary education or an equivalent education.

Applicants should have adequate German language skills and provide a certified copy of the school-leaving certificate insofar as the certificate was not acquired at a German school.
