The Orden der Barmherzigen Schwestern vom heiligen Vinzenz von Paul (Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vinzenz von Paul), this is the official name, was not just established by St. Vinzenz von Paul (1581-1660). It dates back to a community of Sisters in Strasbourg, which was founded in 1734 by Cardinal Armand Gaston de Rohan-Soubise, Bishop of Strasbourg. These sisters chose Vinzenz von Paul to be their patron and thus felt committed to his spirit and work. “The Sister of Charity is sent to the world to introduce the goodness of God to the sick and suffering,” stated Vinzenz von Paul. With this maxim, and at the behest of the Archbishop of Freiburg, Hermann von Vicari, the sisters initially settled in Freiburg in 1846; this was followed by settlement in many other cities of Baden. The Sisters came to Mannheim in 1889.
The nuns provide practical services in the Theresienkrankenhaus. They especially help with the care and the pastoral care of the patients but, above all, they are the good souls of the hospital who have an open ear for everyone and significantly shape the Christian atmosphere.
